Mr. W. Bruce Weinrod
Bruce Weinrod is Counselor at the Potomac Foundation.
Appointed by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Mr. Weinrod was the Secretary of Defense Representative Europe and Defense Advisor to the U.S. Mission NATO. His areas of responsibility included Afghanistan, the Balkans, Russia, the EU, NATO military capabilities. Mr. Weinrod represented and negotiated on behalf of the U.S. with senior officials of NATO member nations as well as various non-NATO partner nations in southeastern Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, the Mediterranean region, the Persian Gulf and Asia.
In previous U.S. government service, Mr. Weinrod was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy. As the senior DOD official responsible directly for Europe and NATO, Mr. Weinrod helped formulate and implement U.S. political-military policies and relations and was responsible for bilateral MOUs and security assistance programs. Mr. Weinrod also served on Capitol Hill as the senior foreign policy and national security advisor to two members of the US Senate.
Nominated by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Mr. Weinrod was a two-term member of the Board of the U.S. Institute of Peace.
Mr. Weinrod has been a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where he did research on NATO partnerships with Middle East and Asian nations. As a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the US National Defense University, Mr. Weinrod was involved with studies and analyses and provided recommendations to the US government on various foreign policy and defense-related matters.
As a U.S.-Japan Leadership Fellow at the Japan Society, Mr. Weinrod spent several months in Asia meeting with senior government and business leaders to discuss U.S.-Asia relations and business issues. Mr. Weinrod was also a Senior Advisor to the U.S. Congress-Russian Duma Study Group and has visited Russia numerous times. He has also been a consultant to the Department of State, Department of Defense as well as the Institute for Defense Analysis. Mr. Weinrod has organized international conferences and Track Two meetings on foreign policy, national security and international cooperation topics with participants from governments, business, the thank and academic communities and journalists.
Mr. Weinrod serves on the Organizing Committee for the annual Halifax International Security Forum. He also is on the International Board of the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF). In this capacity Mr. Weinrod has advised on the development of security sector reform in nations seeking to establish or enhance democratic practices in the security sector. Mr. Weinrod is a member of the Defense Trade Advisory Group (DTAG) at the U.S. State Department and served as a Public Member of the U.S. Delegation to the OSCE.
In the private sector, Mr. Weinrod has been Managing Director and General Counsel at International Technology and Trade Associates Inc., where he provided strategic counsel on investment, regulatory, legislative and policy concerns, including export control matters.
He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the District of Colombia Bar, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
